Why you should have a Will
While most of us understand the importance of having a Will, the reality is that many people don’t have one. In fact, around two-thirds of the population in England & Wales currently do not have a valid Will.
The importance of making a will
Creating a Will is the only way to ensure your wishes are carried out after your death. Without a valid Will, your property will be distributed according to the Law of Intestacy, which may not reflect your wishes.
Considerations for different life situations
If you are single
You may want to allocate your estate among friends, relatives, and charities according to your preferences.
If you are married
Don’t assume your spouse will inherit everything. Brothers, sisters, or parents might have claims on your estate, and often, your children have a right to a portion of it. If you are living with a partner but are not married, the law may treat you as a single person, potentially leaving your surviving partner with nothing. This can result in arguments and disputes at a time when your family should be focused on coping with their loss.
Settled Ways Wills and Estate Planning was established to address the challenges families encounter when a loved one passes away. With my background in Funeral Care, I have witnessed firsthand the problems that arise when clear directions are not provided.
Writing a will ensures your wishes are honored after you have gone, relieving your family and friends from the stress of guessing what you would have wanted.
